Vision & Aims of Department

Vision for the Languages Department

Our Vision for Languages is to prepare students to become confident Global Citizens, to build linguistic proficiency, to foster a love for Languages and to promote Cultural Awareness. We also want to equip our students with transferrable skills and embed high expectations that will promote and support improved outcomes. We will achieve this with engaging teaching methods in an enjoyable, inclusive, diverse, and child-centred environment. Our key priorities are improving examination results, providing high quality learning and teaching and fostering a lifelong interest in languages. The wellbeing of our staff members and students is also paramount.

Our aim in the Languages Department is to provide quality teaching and learning which is centred upon the needs of the child, giving pupils the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We continually aim to promote the ethos of Edmund Rice at all times. We aim to promote positive attitudes to language learning as a means of providing enjoyment and intellectual stimulation. To develop pupil’s abilities to communicate effectively in the target language, through both the spoken and written word, using a range of vocabulary and structures. To provide opportunities through Modern Languages for the personal and social development of the pupils. We also aim to encourage skills, language and attitudes which will be useful for further study and for vocational and leisure application and to encourage positive attitudes of tolerance and understanding of speakers of other languages. We also aim to develop knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where French is spoken such as France, Africa, Canada and the Caribbean.

Outline of Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5

KEY STAGE 3

In Year 8 pupils have a choice of French, Spanish or Irish and will continue with this language into years 9 and 10. French is very popular. Topics include hobbies, sports, school, describing others, where you live, weather, and nationalities. In Language class we do a lot of games, songs and watch films to help engage the pupils as much as possible. We subscribe to the Linguascope website to help with home learning. In French we learn about the culture of France, and other French speaking areas- Canada, Africa and the Caribbean.

KEY STAGE 4

At KS4 students follow the CCEA GCSE Specification and have four examinations at the end of Year 12 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Topics studied include holidays, health, free time, festivals and future plans. BBC Bitesize, Memrise, CCEA and Linguascope are excellent websites for GCSE French.

Career Opportunities

Careers is an integral part of Language learning. Careers are part of our School topic at KS3 and Future plans at KS4. We use the world of work as a context for using the language, we write to pen friends to find out about their family’s careers and local employment. We write CVs and do interview practice through the target language. Some careers with languages include a teacher, tour manager, lawyer or air steward.
